Eddie Halliwell

Gatecrasher catch up with Eddie Halliwell ahead of his set on Saturday 29th January

You’ve been nominated in Mixmag’s greatest DJ of all time Poll – how does that feel?
I feel privileged to be part of such a list and never expected to be in something like this
at my age, there are some people twice my age there are some serious legends in there,
djs i look up to and admire

Who is your greatest DJ of all time?
That’s a tough one – I admire different DJ’s for so many different things –

Where did you spend New Year?
I played in Puerto Rico on new years eve this year. My favourite NYE gig of all time has to be a gig i did a couple of years ago – on a beach in Rio De Janeiro, playing to over million people – that was an incredible sight and experience!

What was your highlight for 2010?
2010 was another great year – Ibiza, Brazil and Australia were highlights for me – I love playing in these territories. Two real stand out gigs being Green Valley in Brazil and Summadayze festival in Gold Coast – both immense!

What are your plans for 2011? To keep the fire fully fueled!

How’s the Fire it up Radio Show going?
From Strength to Strength – I’ve got 10 million listeners, spanning from every corner of the globe. It’s amazing to be able to hit such as vast audience every week with the syndicated show.

You’ve had a long history with Gatecrasher, are you looking forward to Leeds this month?

I can’t wait! Gatecrasher was one of my first ever residencies so it’s always special to come back. It’s also quite close to home, so they’ll be a big team of friends and lots of familiar faces that I am looking forward to seeing.

What can we expect? Full fire!.

Tell us about Ed-It?
ED-IT is an exclusive platform for me to perform from, a show with special effects and visuals all integrated into what I am doing on stage. It allows me to be a more creative DJ, using equipment to remix/re-edit tracks live, hence the name.

Tell us about the Eddie Halliwell I-Phone App?
It’s a free app, available to download from iTunes , which gives people access to exclusive gig and behind
the scenes video footage, photos, streaming of my global Fire It Up Radio show and live broadcasts, Fire It Up Podcasts, along with direct news and updates. It’s just a starting point for the app really with more unique plans to release more features in the future.”

Gatecrashers Defining Moments

Gatecrashers Defining Moments

Tiesto:

"Gatecrasher has got a special place in my heart since it was the first club I played at in the UK. This is a big loss for the international clubbing scene and I therefore truly hope that the people behind Gatecrasher will have the power and energy to rebuilt this great club!”Rich Solarstone
"Gatecrasher is the spiritual home of Solarstone... Seven Cities being
the last track played at GC1 is both touching and tragic.. i look
forward to dropping it again when the club is rebuilt and shiny and
sparkling once more."

Paul Van Dyk:

“I was devastated to hear Gatecrasher One being destroyed by a fire on Monday. Gatecrasher has played a vital role in my career, has always been one of my all time favourite clubs and will always hold very special memories for me. I wish the team all the best and I ´m looking forward to play at Gatecrasher soon again.”

Armin Van Buuren:

“I was really shocked to hear Gatecrasher One burned down. This venue has meant a lot for the birth of trance and for dance music in general. It’s almost like what Liverpool was to the Beatles. It was that big! I’m sure I speak on behalf of a lot of fans of dance music if I say this is a sad day for dance music. I had some of my best nights there”

Ferry Corsten:

“For me Gatecrasher has always been the temple of trance music. Gatecrasher was a massive player, in making the trance genre what it is today. Although the club, Gatecrasher One has burned to ashes…I truly believe the it is spirit of gatecrasher is the most important thing, and it is alive and kicking as we speak. “

DJ Judge Jules (Radio 1):

"This week’s report takes a detour from the regular format of describing what I did over a given 7 day period. At the risk of sounding too emotional, I’ve lost a friend. Maybe it’s melodramatic to wax lyrical about the departure of your favourite club, but I’m sure that Monday night’s fire at Gatecrasher in Sheffield will have struck a nerve with legions of UK clubbers.Just as I was having a meeting at Eden in Ibiza discussing the unprecedented success of this year’s Judgement Sundays season, a phone call came through from my management in London. Gatecrasher in Sheffield was on fire. Later I’d discover that it had virtually burned to the ground. I can’t overstate the personal importance of Gatecrasher, both as the club I most looked forward to playing, and to my career as a whole. I’ve been their most regular and long-standing dj, playing at the night’s evolution through three different venues, the Arches, the Adelphi, and finally their permanent home at the Republic (later know as Crasher 1, or simply ‘Gatecrasher’) in Sheffield.Every dj will tell you that each club’s crowd demands its own individual level of musical familiarity or otherwise. All djs prefer those locations where clubbers place their trust in whoever’s playing, being fully open minded to whatever the dj throws at them. No trance club had a more musically accepting dancefloor than Gatecrasher- I played there over 100 times, including my fortnightly residency around the 2000 period. The memories are too many to mention, poignant occasions being when the crowd sang me ‘happy birthday’ in unison on two consecutive years, and the time when a power cut meant that the music stopped around 1am, yet nobody left for many hours, singing and chanting in place of the soundsystem. There were personal downsides too, with my comments about glowsticks being misinterpreted by the press and carving a wedge with a section of the ‘Crasher Kids’.Thankfully the GC management are adamant that it will be rebuilt, but until Crasher opens its doors again, there’ll be a gaping hole in many clubbers’ lives. One of their last trance nights was the Judgement Sundays UK event in May, so the memories are very fresh."

Matt Hardwick (resident at Gatecrasher since 1995):

“Gatecrasher and in particular the Republic, or GC1 as it became known, shaped the world clubbing scene as we know it. – it was legendary. The news that the club was destroyed by fire has sent shock waves around the world of dance music and I have been getting calls from people in the industry from as far a field as China, Australia and the USA expressing their sadness. In life, I think we are all guilty of taking things for granted and only realise how important something is when it’s no longer there. The news of the fire made all the fantastic memories I have accumulated over the last 12 years flood back to my mind and I am not ashamed to say it brought a few tears to my eyes. The one saving grace is the fact that the people who made that great symbol of word clubbing what it was are still with us today and are currently dusting themselves off with a determination to bounce back with a blue print for the future. Given the individuals involved, I cant see it being too long before I’m heading for the S1 1DJ postcode.....can you imagine what the opening party will be like?"

Nick Riley & Andi Durrant (Crasher Residents):

"Some people might find it hard to get their head around the fact that the loss of some bricks, carpets, bars, lights and speakers can provoke such a reaction.. but its weird how it felt like saying bye to an old friend when we came down to see the aftermath of the fire. It was one of the best venues in the world and as Gatecrasher residents it's a place we've spent more nights in our career than anywhere else. We were very lucky to play the last Crasher with Paul Van Dyk and it's such a shame we won't play there again. Its where We’ve spent some of the best nights of our career, where me and Nick met and started working together, where some of the worlds biggest dance names got their first breaks, where friends have spent countless nights growing up, and where as clubbers we always wanted to play. Most of all, The Republic was home... and we’ll miss it loads"
